I offer a friendly and professional service, from my Barrow, Millom and Whitehaven clinics. However, if home visits are required, these can be arranged, on request.

MY CLINICS:

• Station View, Holker Street, Barrow, LA14 5SF.
This is the ‘assisted living’ building, between the train station and the Army Reserve Centre - opposite Opera Bingo. I hire a treatment room on the ground floor.
On arrival, please come to the door on Holker Street and press my clearly-labelled bell to the left of the door and I will come to let you in.

• Innovation Hair and Beauty, St George’s Road, Millom, LA18 5BA.
On arrival, please come inside, head straight down the stairs and take a seat. I will come out to see if you are waiting.

• The Doll House salon, 50 Market Place, Whitehaven, CA28 7JB

MY RATES (per person, not per ear):

£5 - Ear check (in clinic).

£10 - Ear check which requires a home visit (housebound clients or those who are unable to come to clinic).

£35 - Irrigation procedure (in clinic).

£40 - Irrigation procedure which requires a home visit (housebound clients or those who are unable to come to clinic).
PLEASE NOTE: home visits beyond Ulverston will incur an additional ‘Extended Travel Fee’, if there are no additional visits booked in the area.
Please contact me directly, to arrange.

SUITABILITY CRITERIA:

Ear irrigation is NOT SUITABLE in the following circumstances:
• Recent/unhealed ear drum perforation.
• Unhealed grommets.
• Mastoidectomy.

GROMMETS
According to current NICE guidance, ear irrigation CAN be carried out on ears which have extruded their grommets at least 18 months prior and the ear drums have been confirmed to be fully healed and you have been discharged from ENT.

CHILDREN
NICE guidance also says that children over the age of 6yrs, can have irrigation if necessary and if they’re able and happy to sit still for the procedure.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Pre-syringe Advice and Olive Oil Application.

*** Olive oil should NOT be used if you have/suspect you have a current ear drum perforation.***
As long as you know that both ear drums are intact, it is advised that you use olive oil in both ears (ideally 2-3 drops, 3-4 times a day), for at least 5 days prior to the procedure. The more oil, the better chance of full clearance on the first attempt!

When applying the oil, have your head tilted on the side and leave it in that position for a minute or so, so that the oil can really soak in. Once done and you straighten your head up, only wipe away any oil that comes out - please DON’T wedge cotton wool into your ear, as this will only absorb the oil you’ve just put in and it won’t be able to do it’s job!

You may find that you go more deaf, once you start putting the oil in. This is actually a good thing, as it means the wax is responding to the olive oil treatment! As frustrating as this may be, please persist with the oil.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Possible Risks Associated With Ear Irrigation.

In the 17+ years that I must have performed well over 2000 ear syringes, I’ve NEVER encountered any problems.
However, they do exist - albeit rare - but here they are, briefly:

Ear infection:
This is due to the ear canals being wet and the bugs that thrive in damp conditions!
But they also get wet in the shower, bath or swimming pool! So if you don’t encounter a problem there, you’re unlikely to encounter one here! But still, the advice is to make sure your ears are as dry as possible! I will dry them as best I can, post-procedure, but it’s advised that when you get back home, give them a little blow with a hairdryer, on a cool setting!

Ear trauma:
This is usually in the form of some minor bleeding, because of the fragility of the skin inside the ear. This is usually harmless and settles down, but if it occurs, you do need to watch out for increased pain or signs of infection developing. However, I am very careful, so again, this is unlikely!

Permanently reduced hearing:
Again - very unlikely, but should the ear drum be perforated as a result of the procedure, your hearing will be significantly reduced. In most cases, ear drums should heal, but not always. Again, I am very careful, so this should NOT happen and if it does, it may actually have been caused by a previous attempt to clear the canal.

All of the above are the reasons I will ONLY perform irrigation, if absolutely necessary!
